Biomimetic and Bioinspired Coordination Chemistry: Respiring on CO2, O2 and NOx

Dr. Charles G. Riordan (2013 Delaware Section Award Winner)

Vice Provost of Research and Professor

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

University of Delaware

Metalloproteins have evolved to perform a vast range of chemical transformations of intellectual and practical interest. Unlocking the principles of their fundamental structure-function properties offers the potential to utilize lessons learned to design efficient and cost effective catalysts in areas ranging from renewable energy to fine chemical synthesis. This lecture provides an overview of bioinorganic research in the Riordan laboratory along two fronts- biomimetic CO2 reduction by nickel complexes that involve organonickel intermediates in biocatalysis, and bioinspired O2 reduction by low valent nickel species. The former line of investigation has aided the understanding of carbon cycling by archaebacteria, which respire on CO2, whereas the latter studies have uncovered basic tenets of the structure-function relationship applicable to chemical synthesis. These studies have provided a fertile framework for the education and training of the next generation of chemists.
